Abstract EN

The historians of Islamic Philosophy, whether orientalists or contemporary Arabs, almost agree that as an intellectual trend, the Ash’arites, oppose reason and rationalism, while their opponents, the Mu’tazilites, are the representatives, by excellence, of the rationalist trend.

this is presented, in the case of Ibn Khaldun, for example, through pinpointing his critique of philosophers that was elaborated in the ‘Muqaddimah’, as an Ash’arite position, which contradicts what was elaborated in the same ‘Muqaddimah’ regarding laying the foundation of a rational method in the Science of history.

this paper aims at arguing that Ibn Khaldun’s critique of ‘philosophy and ‘philosophers’, whose point of reference was no doubt Ash’arite, is a position that does not contradict, but is in a state of coherence with his method of history.

by this, the paper suggests a different reading from the prevalent judgement of the Ash’arite rationalism of Ibn Khaldun.
