The orient, preoccupied the west well before the advent of romanticism, whether it be its politics, its wealth, its military strength...
it was discussed in the European courts for centuries, but not only since it had become a subject / object of study of clerics, philosophers, scientists without forgetting the writers and artists who, from the beginning of the nineteenth century will institute the notion of "travel to the east": from now on, one speaks of the orient only after having visited it, but despite this, the image given by travelers remains for the most part very close to the stereotyped and bookish one, inherited from the past centuries.

L’Orient préoccupait l’Occident bien avant l’avènement du romantisme, qu’il s’agisse de sa politique, de sa richesse, de sa force militaire...
On en débattait dans les cours européennes depuis des siècles, mais pas uniquement étant donné qu’il était devenu un sujet / objet d’études des clercs, philosophes, scientifiques sans oublier les littérateurs et les artistes qui, dès le début du XIXe siècle vont instituer la notion de "voyage en Orient" : dorénavant on ne parle d’Orient qu’après l’avoir visité mais malgré cela l’image qu’en donnent les voyageurs demeure pour une grande part très proche de celle stéréotypée et livresque, héritée des siècles passés.
