The public library is one of the oldest types of libraries in history.

its appearance dates back to the golden age of Islam, during the reign of Caliph Harun al-Rashid (149-193 AH).

and since that time the public library has been known for its vast collections of books on human knowledge.

in addition, it is a meeting place between intellectuals and the general public to discuss community issues.

it is a cultural and educational institution open to all of society without any discrimination.

this article is a historical presentation of the different stages of the public library, and how its development has been linked to the intellectual movement of society.

by relying on public reading models resulting from the cultural policies of different countries, we can see the importance of the public library in equal access to information and source documentation.

in other words, its educational, scientific and cultural functions promote the concept of democratization of education and knowledge for citizen and society.
