English Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge that students in the sixth and ninth grades have about their circulatory system and identify the misconceptions that they might have about it.

The study sought to achieve these goals by trying to answer the following two main questions: How do children in grades 6 and 9 describe their circulatory system and what are the misconceptions they hold about it? What is the pedagogy content knowledge (PCK) that science teachers have about this subject? A qualitative approach was adopted to achieve the goals of this study.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to collect data from the participants with two phases of data collection: The first one was describing and interpreting student understanding patterns of the body systems in general and the circulatory system in particular.

The second phase was scientific representations.

(i.e., participants were asked to draw their circulatory system).

The researcher has developed special criteria to analyze those drawings.

Furthermore, classroom observations were also conducted to conclude the pedagogy content knowledge (PCK) of the science teachers in the targeted classes.

Tools validity and reliability were confirmed.

The results of the qualitative analysis of the data (the semi-structured interviews) revealed that the sixth and ninth grade students hold many misconceptions related to the circulatory system and its function, importance, location and its scientific representation as well.

In spite of the fact that there was reasonable progression in the theoretical knowledge, the scientific representations for both grades participants were insufficient.

Additionally, they were unable to see the connection and integration between the circulatory system and the rest of the body systems.

One final significant result indicated that students in both grades were not able to reason at the micro-level of their circulatory systems.

The results of the classroom observations proved that the students’ misconceptions were related to many resources; the first on has something to do with the student’s context and their daily lives.

The second one is related to the teaching methods and the teachers PCK.

Classroom observations analyses indicated that there is a difference in the two teachers PCK, yet both of them used superficial ways of knowledge transformation and classroom questions and activities.

The researcher noticed that the teacher-centered approach was adopted by the two science teachers.

They barely used learning by discovery, group work, or any other creative teaching methods.

Many recommendations and teaching implications were proposed in light of this study results.
