Arabic calligraphy is full of charm, but beyond the aesthetics lies a history reflecting rich heritage and deep tradition.

It was first discovered in ancient Nabatean inscriptions found at Madain Saleh in AlUla, in the north of the Kingdom.

In the hundreds of years that followed, Arabic calligraphy took many different forms until it reached the current style that we know today.

You will find many different variations, some of which are more famous than others, but the best-known are Kufic, Naskh, Diwani, Ruqaa, Thuluth and Andalusian script.

Arabic calligraphy can also be seen in Islamic architecture, ancient inscriptions, and in artwork inspired by the Arabic alphabet.

For example, we see this inspiration reflected in the inscriptions embroidered on the curtain of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.

Over the centuries, the discipline has transformed into a stand-alone art with dedicated artists and patrons.
