This paper examines the reasons and backgrounds of the armed conflict that took place in the Tigray region between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian army, in an approach that goes back in history to the roots of the conflict in Ethiopia during the period of the royal empire that ruled Ethiopia (formerly known as Abyssinia) for centuries and was overthrown by the army in 1974 After a series of coups and protests.

The paper also reviews the problems of the political struggle in the Ethiopian regime, which has encountered federalism and centralisation, and looks into its military dimensions and implications both domestically and regionally.
