After ten years of political failure on both Syrian and international levels, Assad reached a fourth presidential term, benefiting from the regional and international interests leading to his survival, the fatigue of the Syrians, and utilizing an orchestrated and comically staged election.

Recognition of Assad in the post-elections era would prolong the violent conflict by maintaining the root causes of the conflict found in his authoritarian regime, which stands accused of committing crimes against humanity.

The international statements are insufficient, given Assad’s readiness to manipulate UN resolutions, unless a political solution is fully implemented according to the 2254 UN Resolution.
