English Abstract
This study aims to identify the effectiveness of a learning environment that applies ‘proof without words’ strategy in developing and retaining algebraic thinking skills for female eighth graders in Gaza.
The research tool: Algebraic thinking skills test (posttest - delayed test).
The sample: 76 female students from the eighth grade were randomly selected.
The sample was distributed into two eighth-grade classes from Sabra and Shatila School, a public school in the Middle Area.
Study approach : The researcher followed the empirical approach dividing the sample into two similar classes using pre-posttests.
Study Results : 1- There are statistically significant differences at (α=.05) between the mean of the control group’s grades, and the mean of the experimental group’s grades in the posttest of algebraic thinking skills for female eighth graders.
2- There are statistically significant differences at (α=.05) between the mean of the experimental group’s grades in the posttest and delayed test, and the students’ retention of using mathematical patterns skill.
According to the study results, the researcher recommends the following : Researchers and specialists in Curriculum and Teaching Methods of Mathematics should be informed about the necessity of using ‘proof without words’ in teaching.
It is also necessary to hold training courses for mathematics teachers on the use of ‘Proof without words’ in teaching mathematics, and to include enrichment materials in school mathematics books that display ‘proof without words’ models.
