English Abstract
The study aimed at analyze the textbooks of ‘Our Beautiful Language’ for the early grades in the light of phonological awareness skills and to build a suggested proposal for enriching phonological awareness skills in the content of Our Beautiful Lan-guage textbooks for the early primary grades.
The study tools consisted of preparing a list of phonological awareness skills, and a content analysis card of Our Beautiful Language textbooks in the light of phonolog-ical awareness skills to be developed for the pupils in the first grades and the focus group.
The study sample included Our Beautiful Language textbooks for the early grades (first grade to fourth grade), whereby the whole textbooks for the first and second semesters of the academic year 2019-2020 were analyzed.
The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical approach.
The most important results of the study are the following: Building a list of phonological awareness skills to be developed among pupils of the early grades.
The list includes (10) basic skills, and (41) subskills.
The percentage of availability of phonological awareness skills in Our Beautiful Language textbooks for the early grades is weak.
The content of Our Beautiful Language textbooks for the early grades lacks some phonological awareness skills, at 0%, such as syllable identi-fication, isolation, and segmentation.
In light of the study results, the researcher recommends the following: The need to develop the design of Our Beautiful Language textbooks for the early grades to include activities for phonological awareness skills.
Training teachers to use phonological awareness skills in listening, read-ing and writing topics in Our Beautiful Language textbooks for the early grades.
Enhancing phonological awareness skills in reading lessons, and linking them with the reading aloud skills
