Abstract EN

This article aims to study the omission in the Holy Qur’an through studying Yusuf’s story.

It is purely a semantic study.

It consists of a preface, an introduction and two sections.

The introduction presents a quick overview about Surat Yusuf and its purposes, characterizing the concept of omission linguistically and idiomatically.

The first section discusses the omission in Surat Yusuf, its reasons, conditions and types.

The second section deals with the types of omission, purposes, rules and their evidences.

The study concludes that omission is one of the remarkable phenomena in the Holy Qur’an, especially in the story telling.

Omission does not happen unless there is presence of evidence that indicates it and clears its meaning.

The Holy Qur’an is the first book of rhetoric ever.

It reaches the meaning wanted in the shortest term and expressive style.

Arabic linguists put lots of conditions for omission to happen, including: causing no ambiguity, indicated by evidence.

Omission has five types: omission of a letter, a word, a sentence, more than a sentence and omission of affix inflection.

The styles of omission of the Holy Qur’an have various rhetorical and linguistic purposes such as shortening, briefing, generalization, etc., as mentioned in the study.

Yusuf’s story is one of the best stories ever and has been stated by the Holy Qur’an itself as Allah Al-Mighty says: “We relate to you the best of stories through this Qur'an by Our revelation to you (O Mohammed), though before this you were one of those who did not know.” (Yusuf, 3).

The study employs the statistical approach which has helped in counting omission types mentioned in Yusuf’s story, i.e.

twenty nine types.
