Abstract EN

Female inmates in punitive and correctional institutions differ from male inmates and their condition requires particular attention.

most female inmates suffer physically, mentally and socially, and often have health problems; incarceration may have varying effects on their lives.

this study aims to illustrate the fundamental rights of female inmates as per legislations in force in the united Arab emirates, and the international rules and conventions on treatment of female inmates.

study throws the spotlight on female inmates’ special needs provided for by national legislations, and international conventions, and on relevant rights.

descriptive, analytical method was used to explain female inmates’ rights by means of relevant literature, including legal, social and punitive references; national legislations and policies in force in the UAE and human rights – related international principles, rules and conventions.

findings have shown that convicted female inmates in the country’s punitive and correctional institutions enjoy all male inmates’ fundamental rights without any discrimination in treatment, and that female inmates are granted all fundamental rights.

findings have also shown the attention devoted by punitive and correctional institutions in the UAE to provide health care for female inmates according to their special nature and in a manner preserving their human dignity, and for accompanied children by dedicating a special section, or building to nursing mothers, which is consistent with international principles, rules and conventions on female inmates’ rights in punitive institutions.
