Abstract EN

Technological advancement in means of communication and information, and the increasing number of users have brought about a social change.

the increasing number of users is ascribable to the uncontrolled accessibility of such means which have become platforms for exercising freedom of opinion and expression; for listening to and conversing with others virtually and for exchanging information - whether true or false – easily.

rumor spreading, particularly online, resulted in family and society disintegration; instability and lack of confidence in political and economic decision makers.

this study is intended to throw the spotlight on the importance of countering online rumors, and on the risks they pose to public order.

it also aims to develop a legislative framework for curbing the spread of rumors and to adopt a national antirumor strategy at all security and executive levels.

descriptive, analytical method was used via which the topic was described; relevant data analyzed; correlation between its elements and views on the same illustrated.

analytical method involves garnering data on a specific phenomenon with a view to identifying it along with all relevant aspects.

study showed that online rumors were multiple and diverse with long-terms goals and that national legislations set out penalties for rumor spreading crime whereas preventive aspects and online rumor spreading by journalists, or via their websites, were not addressed.

study recommends adopting a national anti-rumor strategy; developing a framework for curbing the spread of rumors and raising the public’s awareness about adverse impacts associated with rumor spreading.

study contributed to identifying the impact of rumor spreading on political, economic and social aspects, and on decision makers.
