Abstract EN

This study deals with the issue of Imam Ali's embracing Islam according to Al-Jahiz.

The most interesting point that Al-Jahiz wrote about is that he compared Imam Ali's conversion to Islam with that of the Caliph Abu Bakr.

Though he did not deny that Imam Ali was the first to embrace Islam among other Muslims, he considered him chronologically next to Abu-Bakr.

At the same time, he did not consider them equal in the quality of their belief, since the conversion of Imam Ali, he believes, was a matter of dictation and instruction, as he was not aware of faith.

Conversion, in his opinion, can be stimulated by the environment where he grew up, i.

e.

the house of the Prophet, besides the protection that he used to receive from his father Abu-Talib.

As for the Caliph Abu Bakr, he embraced Islam at a grown-up age that qualified him to better understand the meaning of Islam, let alone the fact that he did not receive such protection as Abu Talib provided to his son, Imam Ali, which made him more vulnerable to the dangers and harassment of the Quraysh, and therefore he believes that his faith outweighed the faith of Imam Ali.
