Abstract EN

This article aims to explore the issue of beautification known in Arabic as “Alnams wa Altashqir”.

With the vast and numerous forms of artificial beautification available today, the majority of which are used on the face; being the center of attraction and essence of beauty; the most common and widespread of these types of beautification amongst women today is the bleaching of facial hair, in particular the eyebrows.

Thus, this study has been undertaken to explore this issue and the legal provision of it, by explaining what it entails, the different types available, and the scholarly views on the topic; providing their evidence, discussing each, and then concluding by selecting the strongest opinion and directing the other views of the jurists.

Due to the fact that bleaching is closely related to the topic of Nams or the plucking of the eyebrows, Nams was first discussed to provide an entry point into the study of bleaching, and then in detail; explaining what it entails, its ruling and reasoning.

The study concludes that linguistically Nams includes the plucking of all hair, or the facial hair more particularly, and even more specifically the eyebrows.

In the Islamic context the last meaning is the closest (i.e.

the eyebrows), the most correct opinion is that Nams is considered to be prohibited, and the reason is that it involves the resemblance to the effeminate, as it is a symbol of them.

It is also concluded that the closest provision in regards to bleaching is permissibility; as it closely resembles the use of hair dye in general.
