A field experiment was conducted at the Ministry of Agriculture–Research Station located at Abo-Ghraib Agricultural Research bureau during the fall season 2020, to evaluate the moisture distribution, water consumption, maize yield and water use efficiency under alternated partial, and fixed drip irrigation methods.
The experiment accomplished in two systems which are the Surface Drip (DI) and Subsurface Drip (SD).
Each system included five irrigation methods: conventional irrigated method (CI), 75 and 50% out of water amount of CI for each of alternated partial irrigation APRI75 and APRI50, and fixed partial irrigation FPRI75 and FPRI50, respectively.
The moisture content was evaluated when 55% of the available water for CI treatment was depleted, and determined depth and irrigations date.
The results showed that the CI treatment under the subsurface drip irrigated system retained higher moisture content at the drip source with increasing attained 12.1% compared to the CI under subsurface drip irrigated system.
Subsurface drip irrigation system retained a higher soil moisture content of 4.74, 9.29 and 7.43% for APRI75, APRI50, FPRI75 respectively compared to DI.
Water consumption differed as the difference of the irrigated system and its methods.
Water consumption for conventional irrigation achieved 685.3 and 579.3 mm season-1 for DI and SD systems, respectively.
It decreased by 15.5 for each of APRI75 and FPRI75 and 13.8% for each of APRI50 and FPRI50 compared to the CI treatment of DI, and decreased by 16.8 for each of APRI75 and FPRI75 and 36.1% for each of APRI50 and FPRI50 compared to the CI treatment of SD, this could be happened due to the decrease of evaporation resulting from reducing the surface area of the exposed soil to wetting.
