Abstract EN

An experiment was conducted to test the performance of a diesel engine and measure exhaust emissions within different levels of the fuel temperature.

the work had been done in the engineering workshop/Agricultural Machines and Equipment Dept.

College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences–University of Baghdad during the year 2021, using a Four-cylinder, four-stroke, water-cooled (direct injection) diesel engine, and It was connected to an electric dynamometer, and electric loads (electric heaters) were connected to apply load on the internal engine, The engine was fueled with diesel fuel within three levels of diesel fuel temperatures (30 ℃, 40 ℃, 50 ℃), using a thermoelectric system to control the fuel temperature automatically, the engine was running at a speed of 1200 and 1500 (rpm) and at a fixed level of load (full load), The performance indicators of the engine that were studied are (the brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency) and the emissions from the running engine (the unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon dioxide(CO2), the concentration of Particulate matter(PM) in the exhaust gases), under the complete randomized design system (CRD) and under the 5% probability level to compare the averages of the coefficients and the results were analyzed using the GenStat Release 12.1 program, The results showed that the fuel temperature 40℃ and 50℃ recorded a reduction in each of the (brake specific fuel consumption with the following percentages 11.07% , 15.50% and concentration of unburned carbon particles in the exhaust gases with the following percentages 33.65% , 36.62% and the concentration of carbon dioxide gas in the following percentages 25.40% , 38.80% , and they also recorded an out performe in the brake thermal efficiency with the following percentages 10.95% , 15.97% , and (a variation in the concentration of Particulate matter in the exhaust gases with the following percentages 35.80% , 0% and respectively compared with the fuel temperature 30 ℃, The results also showed that increasing the engine speed from 1200 to 1500 rpm led to a reduction in the brake specific fuel consumption by 7.09% and an outperformed in brake thermal efficiency by 8.59% , and concentration of unburned carbon particles in the exhaust gases at a rate of 6.24% and concentration of carbon dioxide gas at a rate of 8.56% , and (concentration of Particulate matter in the exhaust gases at a percentage of 20.70% , Based on the foregoing, it is preferable to maintain the diesel fuel temperature within 50 ℃ to obtain the best results.
