Abstract EN

The topic of demographics is very important in Djibouti because it underlines one of the primary fundamental components of the state.

Demographics accrues several consequences, among which is the distribution of legislative and executive political posts in the country.

In a similar vein, demographics played a determinant role in political election processes upon multiple occasions as well as the selection of the ruler.

The tribes of Issas and Afars are considered the biggest that inhabit Djibouti, of which most of the population descends.

Other smaller tribes also resides the country, thereof some are of Arabic origins.

Nonetheless, most of population shares similar ancestries, namely Cushitic roots, being those who first settled in at the red sea’s coastline In addition to demographics, this study tackles traditions, customs and religious beliefs of the population.

It also examines education in both its early form represented by the Kuttabs, to the establishment of schooling system during French colonial rule, and finally education after independence.

This study will also briefly refer to some of the past social problems in Djibouti.
