Abstract EN

This study aims to identify the origins of sciences that have recently appeared in the Arab heritage, including the science of place names (toponymy), and to prove this with clear evidence, through extrapolation of books written by Arab scholars, and we have chosen from them for this research the book Dictionary of countries for Yakut Al-Hamawi, who died in the year (622) for migration.

In this study, the researcher has adopted a descriptive, inductive, and comparative approach, based on extrapolating the names of places mentioned in book “Mu’jam Al-Buldan” and classifying them according to the means that research their origins.

Such as diminutive, dual, plural, lineage or addition, feminine, and affixing.

Thus, the study concluded with results that include proving the precedence of the first Arab scholars, in what was introduced into a science at the present time, ie: the science of the origins of place names (toponymy), and this is evidenced by singling the plural is one of the original means according to Al-Hamawi in his book Mu’jam Al-Buldan, and one of his singular methods is to remove plural determinants such as deleting the plural suffix, or other determinants.
