Abstract EN

This paper attempts to prove that Islam is a religion of tolerance and coexistence by refer- ring to the Document of Al-Madina Al-Manawara (the Luminous City), laid down by the prophet Moammed (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him).

This document is consid- ered as the first document written by the prophet after Higra.

It contained the basic civil rules and laws of the State, governing the relationship between Muslims and between Muslims and others.

The document was based on rules that established human coexis- tence, equality, human rights and tolerance as basic principles of Islamic Shariah and law.

The paper is divided into two sections.

The first section deals with the concept of peace- ful coexistence linguistically and terminologically, the common pillars of coexistence among peoples and nations, the Western view of the non-Western people in past and present, and the Islamic view of the common principles of coexistence as shown in the Holy Quran.

The second section is devoted to the study of Al-Madina Document as an example of a realist and germane legal document that advocates human peaceful cocxistence.

The section also points out the Document's fundamental principles of coexistence, reflecting on the re- quirements of achieving such peaceful coexistence in the present.
