The protection of animal welfare is one of the most recent issues on the international arena, as it is a modern idea that had emerged in Britain and had been developed in many other European countries that had realized the environmental, health, economic and social importance of this concept.

The first international legal instruments concerned with ethical principles in the animal world have been established by the Council of Europe wich was the first regional international body that has shown interest for animal welfare protection, through a number of agreements in this context.

this position was supported by the European union by developing policies and legal texts aimed at devoting and strengthening legal protection of animal welfare, and activating the role of the international community in this field, especially in the context of international trade.

however, European institutions must do more to establish the rules for comprehensive protection of animal welfare at the international level.
