The Syrian capparis spinosa is a medicinal plant spread throughout syria.

flavonoids and glucosides, such as rutin, are ones of its most effective medical components.

the extraction of capparis spinosa leaves with soxhlet method and ethanol (80%) gave 2.73% of rutin.

we obtained 2.34% of pure rutin, after leave extract purification using thin layer chromatography (TLC).

the chemical identity of purified rutin was proved with its superposed peak with that of standard rutin, after applying high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

type 2 diabetes was induced in rats by alloxan injection(150mg/kg/ip).

High blood glucose level returned to normal level in diabetic rats treated with a daily dose of rutin (100mg/kg/po), for one month, that in comparison with untreated diabetic rats, or treated with metformin (20 mg/kg/po), or capparis leave extract (400 mg/kg/po).

rutin treatment caused an improvement in hepatic and renal function of diabetic rats affected by alloxan, unlike metformin.
