Freeze drying (FD) has gained more importance as a method for preparing coated microparticles.

This study aimed to prepare and to investigate the characteristics of enteric sulfasalazine- loaded microparticles (MP) prepared by freeze drying (FD) method.

particle size distribution, residual moisture, differential scanning calometry (DSC), drug release profiles, yield, and encapsulation rate were studied.

Sulfasalazine (SSZ) was lyophilized with sucrose, lactose, mannitol (stabilizers), Eudragit (Eud S100) (gastro-resistant coating agent), hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) (plasticizer) and polysorpate as a surfactant in aqueous disperstions.

MP produced by FD had a median size about 8.5 μm, the moisture content was 2.2%.

DSC diagrams showed an absence of the drug peak, which may refer to its encapsulation.

SSZ release profile showed little drug release in the simulated stomach medium 5.2%, after 3 hours, whereas it gave high release in the simulated intestine medium equal to 91.3% in the same period of time.

the yield of the process was about 86% and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) was 90%.

our results confirmed that the freeze drying technique is one of the good methods used to produce enteric microparticles.
