Abstract EN

The essential oils represent valuable sources for natural antioxidant.

In this present study, the essential oils from cultivated and wild leaves of Syrian Vitex agnus-castus L.

were extracted, the yields of both oils were determined, and then analyzed by GC-MS.

The antioxidant activity of the essential oils was determined by total Phenolic and Flavonoids contents and by their scavenging effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH).

GC-MS analysis was resulted in the detection of 27 components, representing 85.16% of the cultivated oil and 31 components, representing 90.41% of the wild oil.

The main constituents found in both VAC essential oils were 1,8-Cineole and Sabinene.

The result showed that total Phenolic contents of wild VAC essential oil was higher than the cultivated one, while the Flavonoids contents were not detected in the essential oil from cultivated and wild leaves of Vitex agnus-castus L.

This study demonstrated that no significant difference between both essential oils in their scavenging effect on DPPH radical.

Finally, This study allowed to use the essential oils from leaves of VAC as natural antioxidants.
