Myasthenia gravis is an auto-immune disorder characterized by defective neuromuscular transmission and consequent muscular weakness.

It is caused by the formation of auto-antibodies to elements of the neuromuscular junction.

Neostigmine methylsulfate (NMS) is an Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor administered parenterally and has a short half-life (about one hour).

Extended release hydrogel systems containing microparticles based on Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) and other polymers as carriers for NMS were developed as an alternative to the conventional dosage forms, and to enhance patient compliance.

Microparticles were prepared using coacervation technique and formulated into hydrogel systems, with two different concentrations based on poloxamer 407 as a gelling agent.

An analytical method was developed to titrate NMS in hydrogel systems using U.V.

spectrophotometry.

In vitro drug release studies were carried out for 24 hours to evaluate the amount of the released drug.

Formulas which contained Acacia+BSA, Pectin+BSA, Sodium alginate+ BSA with concentrations of 0.6 mg/ml poloxamer 407 were able to extend the drug release to 24 hours.

In vitro release studies showed that the prepared hydrogel systems are promising drug delivery systems compared with the conventional forms.
