Atherothrombotic diseases caused by thrombus formed in blood vessels are considered to be responsible for a high rate of deaths.
Commonly used thrombolytic agents like streptokinase, alteplase and other recombinant DNA technology products have certain limitations that may lead to serious consequences.
Since ancient time herbal preparations like Allium sativum have been used for the treatment of several diseases.
This research aims at investigating the thrombolytic effect of A.
sativum extract and synergistic activity compared with streptokinase.
An in vitro thrombolytic procedure was used to investigate the thrombolytic effect of plant 80% methanolic extract in blood sample from healthy human volunteers along with streptokinase as a positive control and water as a negative control.
The results showed 46.87% thrombolytic activity for A.
sativum extract alone and 72.51% synergistic activity with streptokinase on thrombolysis.
On the other hand streptokinase alone showed 86.25% thrombolytic activity.
As conclusion, the observations indicated that A.
sativum would be a promising source as a clot lysis drug.
Howerver, in vivo clot lysis properties are yet to be discovered.
