Abstract EN

Leishmania tropica is the causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Syria.

Since Leishmania parasites exhibit resistant against a wide range of drugs, it becomes important to study the genetic diversity among L.

tropica strains and its impact on treatment response.

In this study, molecular typing was conducted to many local isolates of L.

tropica, genetic diversity and strain clusters were established according to similarity ratios based on RAPD markers.

Then, the effect of thymoquinone was tested on tow isolates showing the highest genetic difference using MTT.

Molecular typing results showed that all the studied isolates belong to L.

tropica, RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) results revealed a slight variation between the isolates as indicated by Jaccard factor, where it was 0.82- 1.

In addition, Leishmania parasites were clearly affected by TQ treatment; without any significant differences between isolates.

Our results showed that the genetic difference between Leishmania tropica strains does not change the response to thymoquinone treatment.
