Abstract EN

The clinical use of aminoglycoside antibiotic Gentamicin (Gen), which is widely used against serious and life-threatening infections, is limited by the frequent incidence of nephrotoxic effects leading to acute renal failure.

This study was designed to investigate potential protective effect of highly selective angiotensin II (Ang II) type 1 (AT1) receptor blocker Telmisartan (Tel) on the renal damage generated by Gentamicin in rats.

36 Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups (6 rats each): Naive, Tel group (10 mg/kg/day orally for 7 days), Control group received 1 ml/day 0.9% NaCl intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 7 days, Gen group (100 mg/kg/day i.p.

for 7 days), Gen 100 mg/kg/day + Tel 5 mg/kg/day concurrently for 7 days), Gen 100 mg/kg/day + Tel 10 mg/kg/day concurrently for 7 days).

Evaluation of Gen-induced renal structural alterations was performed by morphological and histopathological examination, in order to determine possible beneficial effect of Telmisartan co-administration with Gentamicin.

Administration of Gen may caused glomerular atrophy, necrosis of tubular cells, inflammation and congestion manifestations.

These alterations found to be alleviated by concurrent treatment with Tel.

As conclusion, This study suggests that concurrent treatment with Telmisartan alleviate kidney tissue insults induced by Gentamicin in experimental rats.
