Abstract EN

The consumption of energy drinks has been on the rise in worldwide since 2000, because of their ability to heighten mental alertness, improve physical performance and supply energy.

Energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, ginseng, L-carnitine, B-vitamins and others.

Taurine increases muscle mass.

Muscle endurance and strength.

The cases with undesired side effects increase, because of the consumption of energy drinks which contain taurine in high levels.

So, the control of these products, qualification tests and quantification assays have been developed.

Accuracy, precision and selectivity to assay taurine in energy drinks mixtures have been performed.

Extraction method has been developed to determine the concentration of taurine and eliminate the interferences.

Spectrophotomeric method has been developed, by using ninhydrin, then compare samples has been assayed by a new developed method with the chromatographic method, which is published in draft of Syrian standard specification.

Validation of chromatographic method has been achieved with standard taurine.

Spectrophotometric method has showed results better than chromatographic method (HPLC), and this can be explained that selectivity of ninhydrin when it reacts with taurine is better than selectivity of DNFB when it reacts with taurine.
