Abstract EN

Obestatin is a recently discovered 23-amino-acid amidated peptide, produced in the stomach, which was reported to decrease food intake and body weight in experimental animals.

Fasting obestatin, glucose, and insulin were measured in 35 obese subjects, and 23 apparently healthy subjects as controls.

Fasting obestatin was significantly lower in obese subjects as compared to control subjects (mean=.7.7 vs 83721 ng/ml).

Obestatin levels correlated inversely and significantly with body mass index (R=-0.451, p=0.007), basal insulin levels (R=-0.925, P<0.0001) and HOMA-IR (R=-0.898, P<0.0001).

Obestatin is decreased in obesity and correlated inversely with HOMA-IR.

So, it can be suggested that obestatin is a nutritional marker reflecting body adiposity and insulin resistance.
