Abstract EN

This research aimed to identify the medicinal part of Xanthium and determine the best solvent to extract the active ingredients, which is active against biofilm formation, and comparing the activity between the two species of plant: Xanthium strumarium and Xanthium spinosum.

The parts of X.

strumarium species (seedling, leaves, flowers, fruits) were separated.

The leaves of X.

spinosum were separated after spines were removed.

The plants parts were extracted separately at room temperature, using polarity increasing solvents (cyclohexane-chloroform-methanol) 24 hours for each, and then extracts dried with rotary evaporator.

Their activities were studied against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, by a well diffusion method and measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone.

Afterwards, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of extracts was determined, then the activity against the formation of biofilm were determined by Test Tube method.

The results showed that the cyclohexane extracts of X.

strumarium (leaves, seedling, flowers) have effect against S.

aureus (The diameters of the inhibition zone were 27, 25, 32 mm, respectively), comparing to the positive control (23 mm), the value of MIC = 0.390 mg/ml.

These extracts have strong activity against biofilm forming by S.

aureus.

On the contrary, these extracts have not shown any inhibition for P.

aeruginosa or E.

coli bacteria.

As conclusion, the active ingredients exist in the X.

strumarium parts (leaves, seedlings, flowers) using cyclohexane as a solvent.

And they are more effective than the extracts of the leaves of Xanthium spinosum.

However, this effect is most apparent against the gram-positive bacteria than the gram-negative.
