Abstract EN

Endocrine disorders continue to affect the health of thalassemia patients, foremost of which is hypogonadism.

Some studies have shown that blood transfusion produce significant acute changes in the Hormonal milieu and Semen parameters in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia.

As fatherhood is patients’ quality indubitably one of the main factors, which could improve the of life, therefore, we investigated the acute effect of blood transfusion on 10 .male patients with beta thalassemia major Semen parameters and levels of FSH, LH and Total Testosterone hormones, as well as Serum Ferritin in patients were evaluated, a week before and after blood transfusion.

No improvement was found in sperm quality or the aforementioned hormones, with our observation that 80% of the patients suffer from asthenozoospermia with a general poor semen quality.

The negative result is due to severe iron overload in most of the patients and also from chronic hypoxia, which may be the most important cause of poor sperm quality, as strong positive correlation between hemoglobin concentration and sperm .count was found
