Abstract EN

Today, there is a vast array of critical approaches aimed at analyzing the significations and denotations of literary texts.

Among the most prominent critical methods is the semiotic approach, which analyzes textual signifiers to decipher meaning.

A significant branch under semiotics is “the Semiotics of Passion” which focuses on the analysis of characters’ whims, based on the emotionality of these beings and their fallibility with regard to human sentiments.

These modern critical approaches also cultivate the mechanisms, methodologies and procedures of modern criticism towards rereading pre-modern texts and rediscovering their cultural fertility from different innovative perspectives, as well as their ability to provide different connotational outcomes depending on the critical approach applied.

The aim of this research paper is to apply the “Semiotics of Passion” approach in its readings of a traditional text from “a Thousand and One Nights”.

The paper will analyze the characters’ desires in “the story of the Merchant Ayoub, his Son Ghanim and his Daughter Fitnah” by applying the “Semiotics of Passion” approach proposed by modern critical theories.
