Abstract EN

The aim of the current research is to use the content analysis method to analyze the responses, characteristics, problems, psychosocial needs, and avoidance behaviors of adolescents who stutter qualitatively and quantitatively through analyzing the frequencies and percentages.

The research sample consisted of (37) stutterers, whose ages ranged from (12 to 21 years) of patients from those visiting the Phoniatrics Unit of the Assiut University Hospital.

A standardized clinical interview form (prepared by professional researchers) was applied to them, and the data was analyzed using the content analysis method.

The results of the research showed that the percentage of appearance of the stuttering disorder was (75.67%) in the middle childhood stage.

It continued to the adolescence stage.

The negative impact of stuttering (moderate degree) was at a rate of (43.24%), as stuttering negatively affected all activities of the individual, his home, family, and school interactions and his communication with his friends in addition to increasing avoidance behaviors.

Concerning their interests and hobbies, they were not different from their normal peers.

The results also indicated that the suffering of adolescents who stutter was of a high rate (97.29%) for anticipatory anxiety (anxiety and fear of speaking), while (59.45%) of the sample showed that the most difficult situations that a stuttering adolescent passes through are interactions in the school environment.

A percentage of (56.75%) of the stuttering adolescents expect positive results through their participation in the counseling sessions.

The researchers recommend the necessity of conducting more research and studies to study and investigate the characteristics, psychological and social responses and school problems of adolescents who stutter, and to benefit from them in setting up counseling and rehabilitation programs.
