Nationalism not only spread due to its attractiveness in the eyes of ambitious political elites, but due to its attractiveness to the general public as well.

The nation-state pledged to equality for all citizens before the law.

It raised the people by making them a new source of sovereignty.

Nevertheless, the rise of nationalism has been linked to the increased frequency of civil wars, ethnic cleansing, and hostility to the other.

Nationalism became a subject of academic studies in the aftermath of the Second World War, as historians, politicians, anthropologists, and sociologists contributed to its study as a phenomenon and ideology, and in explaining the reasons for its spread and popularity.

In this article, the researcher is trying to present the theory (the imagined communities of Benedict Anderson 1983), which sought to answer critical questions of nationalism: its origins, how it spread outside Europe, its relationship with modernity and print capitalism, and reasons behind its deep sentimental legitimacy.

Anderson wrote about nationalism from a non-European perspective.

While he condemned colonialism, he praised nationalism as an ideology that inspires love and self-sacrifice, which reflected in its creative product of literature, poetry and songs.

In his interpretation of the origins of nationalism and the reasons for its spread, Anderson sought to blended some of historical materialism with discourse analysis to lay the basis for postmodern nationalism analyzes.
