In recent decades, there has been a growing consensus that sustainable urban development is critical to the future of human societies and planetary systems.

The effects of population growth and the environmental impacts of human activities are evident throughout the world, and can be observed not only in the rapid urbanization of many large cities, but also in small and medium population centers, rural communities, and even uninhabited areas.

For this reason, sustainable urban development is the subject of this licensed thesis.

The thesis focuses on the role of municipal organizations in sustainable urban development, the ways in which the processes of developing strategies and policies that address urban sustainability are organized, and how other stakeholders participate in such processes.

The thesis concludes by presenting a new conceptual framework that aims to enrich such processes - the "five factors" that influence strategic planning for urban sustainability in municipalities.
