Abstract EN

In this report, we present a rare case of Ulcerative colitis in a 6-month infant boy, who was referred to the Children's University Hospital in Damascus with a complaint of failure to thrive, chronic diarrhea with Iron deficiency anemia.

A stool examination revealed the presence of pathologic numbers of leukocytes and red blood cells.

Fecal calprotectin was titrated with a value of 960 μg/g.

A lower gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed, and it displayed a hyperplasia appearance similar to pseudopolyposis in the descending and sigmoid colon.

The histopathology revealed crypt abscesses consistent with ulcerative colitis.

Other causes of chronic diarrhea that may associated with growth failure, gastrointestinal bleeding and Iron deficiency anemia were investigated (gastrointestinal, neoplastic, immunological causes) and the results were negative.

Because of the rare occurrence of inflammatory bowel disease in the infants age group, IBD should be considered in every unexplained chronic diarrhea with GI bleeding.
