Despite the important role played by Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992) in establishing the foundations of contemporary geography, making him one of the world's most famous geographers, until now there has not been an analysis summarizing his publication trends and reflecting his contributions in the field of geography.

This study traces Hartshorne’s work according to the time periods, geographical branches, and type of his research contributions, thereby demonstrating Hartshorne’s status and impact in geography.

It has been determined that more than half of Hartshorne’s scientific research was published during the twenty-five years between 1925-1949, nearly one-third of his research works were published between 1950 and 1969, and the least productive publication period was after his retirement in 1970.

One-third of Hartshorne’s publications were in the field of political geography, and about one-third was in the field of geographic thought.

Although Hartshorne's subject was the field of economic geography, his work in that subject had the fewest publications.

The study also found that nearly three-quarters of Hartshorne’s published scientific research was scientific articles; chapters in the edited books accounted for 21% of his scientific contributions, and his books represented 5% of his publications.

Most of Hartshorne's scientific articles were published in the top five geographic journals in the United States.

One last documented result of this study is that Hartshorne is considered one of the most influential geographers in the world therefore his most important books have been translated into many languages of the world.
