Abstract EN

This study presents urban growth and its trends in the major cities of Al-Kharj (Al-Sayh, Al-Hayathim and Al-Dilam) during the period 1973-2014 using Remote Sensing data and Geographic Information System.

The study worked on building a database to monitor the stages of urban growth within the urban area and the production of multiple maps of the stages of growth.

A comparison of the three cities was combined with maps showing the urban mass in these cities divided by time periods of growth.

The study found that urban expansion in Al-Sayh city takes the south-east and south-west direction due to the obstacles of the Military Industries Corporation, which occupies an area equal to the built-up area in Al-Sayh city.

As a result, the agricultural areas were expanded direction after the year of 2000 to housing schemes that meet the need for more housing.

Therefore, the growth of the city in general was driven north after the removal of the water canal of the Kharj agricultural project.

The urban expansion in the city of Hayathim took the north-west direction.

The city of Dilam was affected by urban expansion in the east natural constraints represented by sand dunes, which led to the direction of urbanization to the west at the expense of agricultural areas.
