Abstract EN

There is no doubt that context has been key to the commentary and explanation (Tafseer) of the Quran as indicated by the scholarly body of explanation produced by Muslim scholars and Imams, past and present.

This research explores how context has been deployed in the commentary tradition and examines how its use determined the validity of different interpretations of the Quran.

Towards this end, it focuses on Aisha Abderahman's book “Rhetorical Commentary, ” and adopts a holistic approach that combines inductive description with analysis to fathom out the book's assumptions and map out its sources.

This research will study how the book uses context to explain and comment on various Quranic chapters, weigh out the accuracy of interpretations of the meaning of the Quran and engage critically with them.

It also tackles how context is analyzed in the book, addressing its roles and types through examples from the book itself.
