ينطلق غادامير من الوعي التاريخي الحق، الذي يأخذ بتاريخية الكائن الإنساني باعتباره كائنا تاريخيا متناه في الزمان، إذ شن نقده على الدراسات التاريخية التي ألقت التراث إلى حبائل البحث الوضعي من أجل الصرامة الموضوعية التي يبثها المنهج العلمي، إذ تعد المشكلة الرئيسية التي حاول غادامير الإلمام بها وكرس جهده الوافر فيها هي الموضوعية التاريخية والتي بمقتضاها يقف المؤرخ على مسافة من الواقعة التاريخية، محاولا الإمساك بها والسيطرة عليها، مثل السيطرة التي يفرضها العالم الطبيعي على الظاهرة الطبيعية.

Gadamer proceeds from the true historical awareness, which takes the history of the human being as a historical being finite in time.
he devoted his great effort to historical objectivity, according to which the historian stands at a distance from the historical fact, trying to capture and control it, like the control imposed by the natural world over the natural phenomenon.
