Abstract EN

In the following article, I’m going to identify some epistemological and historical conditions for the philosophy of action considered as a new field of research that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century within the Anglo-American world; this branch of philosophy has aroused from the discussion about the appropriate modes used in the explanation of human action, but this time the action has to be perceived in itself, independently of any moral criteria.

The American philosopher Donald Davidson, with his theory of causality in action, was a turning point that gave a new direction to this debate.

His theory also constituted a focal point that drew the limits, perspectives and extensions of the theory of action in philosophy and relevant scientific fields.

This historical and epistemological crafted scheme has placed us in front of a problematic about whether it is legitimate to exclude the various ancient philosophies from the circle of philosophy of action, given that theses philosophies were outside the aforementioned epistemological and historical terms and concepts.

I have addressed the issue of action in the Aristotelian ethics philosophy as an example of these philosophies.

In spite of the important place that Davidson gave to the Aristotelian approach of action, Aristotle’s philosophy remains among those philosophies that have considered the concept of action as morally dependent.
