عبر الإنسان خلال مرحلة ما قبل التاريخ عن حياته ومعتقداته عجر رسومات مجسدة على جدران الكهوف والصخور عبر البراري والصحاري، وجسد عاداته وتقاليده وطقوسه من خلال العلامات الرمزية.
وقد ساهم عبر ذلك في التأثير على الفنون في جل الحضارات الغابرة، بحيث نجد أن الموضوعات التي اهتم بها منذ القدم قد ظلت ثابتة نوعا ما.
الهدف من هذه الدراسة هو تقفي الأثر الروماني من خلال البحث عن شكل التعبير الرمزي الدال على أفكارهم، حيث عرفوا بإدخال مفاهيم جديدة عاكسة للحضارات السابقة الأخرى كما ساهموا في التأثير على الرمزية المحلية، ليشكل هذا التجانس مجموعة فنية ثقافية تعكس أفكار المجتمع الإفريقي.
لذلك تنوعت الرموز المجسدة في الفن الروماني كفن النحت وفن الفسيفساء، فبالإضافة إلى كونها شواهد مادية للفكر القديم، التي يعكسها الحس الفني والخيال والواقع، فهي متعددة الأنماط أيضا، ومنها ما يتعلق خاصة بالأشكال الكونية ذات الدلالة الدينية، كالآلهة السبعة التي مثلت على بعض الشواهد الفنية الأثرية.

Prehistoric man expressed his life and beliefs through drawings on the caves' walls and rocks, he tried to translate his customs, traditions and rituals through symbolic signs and helped influence the arts of ancient civilizations.
the romans used symbolic signs to express their ideas by introducing new concepts reflecting other previous civilizations and influencing local symbols, to define the ideas of African society.
symbols are varied in the arts on sculpture and mosaic, and reflect ancient ideas by artistic sense, imagination and reality, which gave material mark.
they are also multi-types, especially cosmic forms with religious meaning, namely the seven gods represented on those materials.
