Allaah has singled out Islamic law as a revelation and a source of legislation for everything that came from the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so the scholars have agreed that sunnah is the second source of legislation in terms of status and not in terms of work.

Allaah, the almighty, has appointed imams and scholars for this nation who have shouldered the burden of memorizing the hadiths of the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and performing them verbally, and others have chosen to preserve them from distortion and alteration, so they have memorized for us everything that came from the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) other than the Qur'an.
