Rumors are not something strange or rejected by all societies, and if that was the case, rumors would have disappeared since ancient times, and they would not have found suitable soil in which to grow and continue to survive, from the first human gatherings to the present day.

if specialized studies cannot identify the first roots of rumor, there is no doubt that the dissemination of rumors in the past has derived its strength from the primitive means of transmitting information, which relied mainly on the transmission of information orally (from mouth to mouth), which had an impact on the rapid spread of rumors among individuals.

the study aims to shed light on the rumors that were circulated among individuals from the common people in Egypt during the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, and the study does not deal with political rumors and related matters of governance among the intellectual elite in society at the time ; it needs independent studies.

rumors between individuals are dealt with in the light of the papyrus documents available to the researcher ; therefore, the divisions of the study and the method of narration proceed within a certain framework, limited to the information provided by the papyrus documents, which are in their entirety few and brief in many matters, unlike source studies on the same subject, whether in Greece or Rome, which are characterized by the abundance of historical materials and the ease of access, classification and formulation, as well as its answer to many questions that papyrus documents are silent about.

the study is also interested in dealing with the impact of these rumors on individuals, and the various attitudes of individuals in responding to them, and trying to remove their negative effects.
