The Nubian society in southern Egypt and northern Sudan was distinguished by cultural features different from the rest of African cultures, which determined its cultural identity through historical times.

among the elements that formed this cultural identity is the Nile river and the cultural beliefs and practices that revolve around it, which remained firmly rooted in the popular culture of the Nubians, where the crocodile is considered part of the semiology of the Nubian culture, which the current study aimed at identifying the crocodile in African cultures, the role of the crocodile in the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptian society, and identifying the symbolism of the crocodile among the Nubians, and the myths and beliefs that revolve around it that formed their culture, where the researcher used the semiology theory and method anthropology with its field tools such as interview, coexistence with the study community, observation and photography in achieving the objectives of the study.

the current study has reached the most important results, the most important of which is that the crocodile symbolizes many Nubian beliefs such as envy, fear and strength, and this was reflected in folk tales, folk songs, Nubian folk proverbs, food culture, diseases, and material culture of housing.
