Abstract EN

The study aims at searching for the relationship between government spending and the twin deficit in Algeria during the period between 1970-2020, and the co-integration test was relied upon to reveal the existence of a co-integration relationship between the study variables, while granger causality and Toda-yamamoto causality were used to determine the direction of the relationship between them and which of them affects the other.

Johansson test results showed that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between government spending and the twin deficit, and Todayamamoto causal results confirmed a two-way relationship between government spending and the budget deficit, whereas granger causal results showed that there is a causal relationship in one direction that goes from government spending towards the trade balance deficit, and the absence of a relationship in the opposite direction.
