This paper discusses the spiritual experience of the French philosopher Simone Weil (1909-1943), and how it is related to the idea of suffering of which she presented a metaphysical analysis through a deep mystical vision, showing her religious culture, her deep knowledge of the Bible, and her study of platonic philosophy.

her vision was also similar to existential philosophers like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Heidegger.

in her analysis of the idea of suffering, Weil added a new concept, affliction that she linked to divine love, and described it as "the essence of Christianity", and "the great enigma of human life".

she considered affliction a kind of dialectic of love between god and man.

in this regard, she also discussed the relationship between affliction and physical pain, and the conditions of human being in a state of affliction.

according to Weil, the concept of affliction was a paradox that combined a set of contradictions such as the reasonable and the unreasonable, freedom and necessity, pain and joy, connection and separation, and eventually the absence and presence of the divine.
