Abstract EN

This study investigates the effect of terrorism on African regional integration process.

it began with clarifying the different dimensions of terrorism, including the most important terrorist groups in Africa, and the new qualitative and tactical changes of terrorist attacks in Africa during the last two decades.

the study confirmed that terrorism affects negatively on African regional integration process, especially through weakening the power and strength of African states which consider the first building blocks in the process of regional integration, in addition to threatening the regional stability and create inappropriate environment for the continuation of the existing integration process or even establishing new one.

in light of these negative effects of terrorism, the study attempted to explain and evaluate a new emerging pattern of combating terrorism in Africa, by which the most affected countries established regional ad-hoc military arrangements to combat terrorism, these arrangements were neither entirely under the control of the African Union nor part from African collective security mechanisms, but it is a response and attempt from the frontline states to counter terrorism.

the study discussed three case studies of these arrangements, regional task force against lord's resistance army ; multinational joint task force (MNJTF) against Boko Haram ; G5 Sahel joint force to fight terrorism.

the study proved that two of these three military arrangements succeeded in decreasing the ability of terrorist groups, areas under its control, number of terrorist attacks and victims.

it also relatively succeeded to fill the gap resulted from the slow operationalization of the African peace and security architecture (APSA), especially its military arm "African standby force".

in light of these results, the study expected that this pattern of arrangements may be repeated in the African continent.
