Abstract EN

Food industry is considered one of the most important sectors in Egypt, cause of its effective role in increasing the rates of economic growth.

The problem of the study is summarized in prevalence of the primitive methods and techniques of manufacturing units of olive in Siwa Oasis, which may result in a low quality of manufactured products and decrease in its efficiency.

Based on this serious problem, the study aimed at conducting an economic and financial evaluation of olive pressing industry in Siwa Oasis, as an attempt to provide the decision-maker with some recommendations on how to plan properly to improve those industries in the future.

The results indicated that the average of total costs of olive presses at the level of Siwa Oasis during the production season of 2021 amounted to about 2.86 million pounds, 2.64 million pounds are constant costs (represents about 92.5% out of the total costs), and about 399 thousand Egyptian pounds (represents about 7.5% out of the total costs) are variable (operating) costs, while the average revenue of olive presses amounted to about 1435.71 thousand Egyptian pounds, then the average of net profits amounted to about 1036.71 thousand Egyptian pounds.

The study found that, according to all indicators of profit and income, and also according to the indicators of the production performance that were used in the study, the second category of olive presses in Siwa Oasis which have a higher manufacturing capacities (300-1500 kg/hour) is more efficient than the first category of the small manufacturing capacity (100-300 kg/hour).

The results indicated that the operating rates and also the exploiting of economic resources (capital and labor) in the second category of olive press are higher than the first category, so it achieved better profits and returns.

With regard to the financial evaluation, estimating the financial evaluation criteria according to the current situation in 2021 and also according to the two sensitivity analysis models (with an increase by 10% in the operating costs, or with a decrease by 10% in the total revenues out of the current situation in 2021), the results indicated to a reasonable profitability of the investment in olive presses in Siwa Oasis.

The values for all of the financial criteria were encouraging to enter into such manufacturing projects, which means that these projects are economically feasible.

In light of the previous results, the study provided some recommendations, which represented in: Increasing the production capacity for the existing olive presses in Siwa Oasis, promoting for the needed investments to make modern olive presses in Siwa Oasis, and the necessity of offering financial support and the sufficient loans for making the agricultural manufacturing units of olives, in order to encourage investment in those industries.
