The potato crop is an important vegetable crop, where approximately 200 thousand feddans are planted annually.

The amount of potato seeds used for plantation is about 250 thousand tons distributed over three growing seasons a year.

The season for importing potato seeds from Western Europe extends from the beginning of November to the end of December each year.

The cost of potato seeds constitute about 50-60% of the cost of production.

Each feddan needs about 750-1000 kg for the cultivation of the summer crop and about 1250 -1500 kg for the cultivation of the Nili crop.

The amount of seeds per feddan could be as high as 1750 kg in the case of some varieties like the Spunta variety.

The main suppliers of potato seeds to Egypt are Scotland, the Netherlands, France and Denmark.

While the main importing company in Egypt is the Domyatek Group with a market share of about 31thousand tons per year.

Other significant importers include the General Union of Producers and Exporters of Horticultural Crops, AgroFood Company, and Deltax Company.

The imports of Domyatek and AgroFood companies from Scotland amounted to 12.7 and 9.9 thousand tons of potato seeds respectively in 2017/18.

And Deltax imports from Scotland amounted to about 1,200 tons in the same year.

The Agrofood Company was the second largest importer of potato seeds in 2014/2015; the volume of its imports was about17thousand tons of seed potatoes.

The Scottish market supplies of potato seeds to Egypt amounted to13.9 thousand tons in 2014/15.

The Netherlands is another important supplier with about 11.8 thousand tons of imports in the same year.

Egypt imports so many varieties of potato seeds but the varieties of Spunta and Mondial are the most important in the Egyptian market.

By comparing the quantities of imported potato seeds during the two years of 2018/19 and 2019/20, it was found that Egypt’s total imports of potato seeds increased from 112 thousand tons in 2018/19 to 135 thousand tons in 2019/20.

The largest imports of potato seeds came from Scotland, the Netherlands and France, with amounts of 38 thousand tons, 32 thousand tons, and 22 thousand tons respectively.
